Sylvia Dzirba-van Rooyen has an undergraduate degree (BSc Interior Architecture) as well as a postgraduate degree (BIArchHons) in Interior Architecture from the University of Pretoria. She also recently completed her Master of Arts in Interior Design from the University of Johannesburg--thesis titled, Holistic interior design for business: Retail design of quick-service restaurants within the Johannesburg context. After completing her initial degrees, she worked in the interior design and architectural sector of the building industry, gaining valuable experience in the hotel, commercial and residential projects for 10 years. She also has extensive experience in concept design, detail design, technical drawing, project administration and office administration.
Sylvia transitioned to teaching in 2015, and has developed and presented a variety of interior design modules (diploma and degree level) and her educational portfolio includes: Building construction I and II, Architectural Drafting, Colour and Design, Interior Design I +II (Studio), Digital Rendering and Modelling I (SketchUp), Architectural Working Drawings and Interior Design Portfolio. Sylvia’s professional focus is largely on design theory, design research, human-centred design, business and sustainability. Given this background, she champions an interdisciplinary teaching approach that aids students in understanding the holistic design process. She is passionate about good design and loves exploring how it can impact and improve lives.
