Student wins 2019 RGD award for packaging design

September 20, 2019

Two recent Graphic Design alumni from LaSalle College Vancouver (LCV) have been selected for the national RGD 2019 Student Awards last month. Congratulations to Jeremy (Bonggu) Kang for winning the RGD 2019 Student Award in the Shikatani Lacroix Award for Packaging Design (Series) category with his project "SAINTLY FLAVOURS". Congratulations also to YuFan for receiving an honourable mention in the same category with "MAKUUCHI."

Jeremy (Bonggu) Kang is a graphic designer who graduated from LCV with a Bachelor of Design in Graphic Design during the Winter 2019 quarter. Jeremy's project – Saintly Flavours – is the winner of the RGD 2019 National Award of Specialty in the Shikatani Lacroix Award for Packaging Design (Series) category. This submission was originally a project from LCV's Dimensional Design class, where he designed the packaging and labelling for a gourmet food gift set.

Saintly Flavours is a gourmet food gift set to be sold in the deli section of high-end shops. Along with the trend that food and the act of eating have become fashionable, the inspiration for the project comes from 2018’s Met Gala fashion theme of Catholicism.

"High quality illustrations, creative idea, memorable and smart logotype make this series very special and aesthetically attractive. All aspects of the design are very good." - Yurko Gutsulyak RGD, Art Director & Graphic Designer at Gutsulyak.Studio

The RGD Student Awards have been organized yearly since 1999 by the Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD), which represents over 3,500 design practitioners, including firm owners, freelancers, managers, educators and students. This year, over 950 projects were submitted from design students across Canada for the RGD awards, and the winning work was selected by a judge body composed of award-winning creative professionals from across Canada.

RGD distributed twenty-two $1,000 awards this year between different categories including branding, print, packaging, digital product design (Awards of Specialty) as well as color, strategy, typography and user experience (National Awards of Excellence). Through RGD, Canadian designers exchange ideas, educate and inspire, set professional standards and build a strong, supportive community dedicated to advocating for the value of design.
