The Theory Behind Gaming

Students in the Game Art and Design Diploma program build rock-solid skills in design, level design, game scripting, written communication, as well as 2D and 3D art. Students learn to write professional design documentation, design games, game systems, game mechanics and level environments, as well as apply knowledge to create their own interactive experiences. Students also have the opportunity to develop professional quality production work to showcase in a portfolio project.

This program has been approved by the registrar of the Private Training Institutions Branch (“PTIB”) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.

  • To apply concepts from foundation level design courses: game design principles and terminology, research, critical analysis, prototyping and all aspects of gaming design.
  • Technical knowledge of scripting, design tools and software in accordance with current industry standards.
  • Professionalism through conceptualizing, planning, executing and delivering quality game design projects that lead toward the capstone project and self-promotion package.
  • Ability to work on team-based game development projects and the deadlines that go into making a market-ready game.

In this Diploma program, students gain knowledge in the managerial and developmental aspects of game production and demonstrate knowledge of planning, budgeting, specifications, constraints, scope, teamwork and problem-solving.

Graduates gain the training necessary to seek design positions in the video game industry in such in-demand positions as a game designer, gameplay designer, systems designer, level designer, mission scripter, free-to-play prototype designer, free-to-play production designer, free-to-play live-ops designer, assistant producer and tester.
